Dan talks about the "Economics of Worship," and the potential dangers of how we pick the music we use for worship. We went a little long, at 22:50 this time, but we're going to work at keeping them shorter in the future. (Our goal is to shoot for 15 minutes or less.)

Dan ambushes Jody with a question about who the Judges were and how God used them. To add insult to injury, he presses the issue, asking how an analogy might be draw between the Judges, and leadership in the modern Church. You'll notice that the recording doesn't catch the very first parts of the introduction, since Dan didn't bother to wait until the recorder was on to fire his surprise question.

Recorded on the 3rd of July, Dan wonders into the topic of what the relationship between Christianity and patriotism is, has been and should be. It's a nice, short show this week and just under 9 minutes. We'd like feedback from listeners on what you think. We just scratched a little at the surface. We think we can learn a lot from you.

We talk about the things preachers are expected to do, what they are trapped into doing, what tradition dictates that preachers do, and question what part reality should play in all of that. What do you expect from your preacher? What should we expect from our preachers. How much of what we expect preachers to do is a waste of time?

MF wrote in (a long time ago) asking us, "Is worship about entertainment? When the focus is so much on the music style isn't that about entertaining the congregation? Shouldn't the congregation be more concerned with worshiping rather than person entertainment?" Dan and Jody take on the question....

Starting in 1 Timothy 3 , we wrestle with the office of Elder, the "office of minister," and more tradition-inflicted bondage in the Church. Were do we find the "office of minister" in the Bible, anyway?

Dan tells a story about a Church he ministered to when confrontation was the only path to healing. "It's one of those stories that just freaks me out."

Dan and Jody talk about our culture's pursuit of pleasure and the price the family pays as a result. Is there a way back? Can the family be restored? Just some thoughts on that kind of stuff.

Let's talk about grace.... for a while. It's a long one, people! Weighing in at 42 min, 35 seconds, this is our all-time, most overweight show... Listen to it, anyway.

Popular culture and the modern Church teach about a "faith" that is believing without evidence, a kind of faith that is weakened by evidence. Real faith, Biblical faith, is actually evidence based belief. C.S. Lewis defines faith as continuing to believe what your reason has accepted. The real enemy of faith is fear, not reason.

kinda of rambling conversation. We didn't know it would turn into a show, but it did. You can hear us clearing lunch from our throats, and talking around breath mints, but it's mostly good stuff worth thinking about. Angels, spirituality, law and legalism, and when Jesus says, "Shut up!"

Forgiveness. Probably the central tenant of Christian behavior. One of the things Jesus talked most about, and gave instructions most about. He also modeled it for us, perfectly (i.e. on the cross). Also, interestingly enough, one of the least practiced behaviors among Christians.... Now, ain't that sumthin'?

As usual, this is not an exhaustive conversation. There is, however, a HOWTO Forgive embedded in there! (No, it's not a "do it yourself," or "forgiveness for dummies" kind of thing... but it oughta work for anyone who listens to this show.)

How many problems in the Church would never grow into problems if we would JUST TALK about them before they became problems? Seriously. Why don't we just talk before things become a problem? "Hey, I love you. Let's talk," would go a long way in building the church.

Our neighbors need to hear the Good News about what Jesus has done for us, just as every generation before them did. Unfortunately, it seems that we're not doing a very good job of telling them about the Good News. Part of the problem is that we're still acting like we live in a predominantly Christian culture. In reality, that culture is gone. Most of the problem is that we just don't bother telling them the Good News at all.

Did you ever think about that? Not in context of "Would Jesus wear a Rolex on his TV show," but as in the theological and psychological impact that the things Jesus had owned would have had on the Church.... and also, the things that were important to him when he looked down from the cross.

Are we even trying to reach the reachable, or are we spinning our wheels and wasting Kingdom resources by trying to win the people we feel comfortable with? Our ineffectiveness in our culture, and the directions we're going trying to reach people certainly begs the question.

We'd love to get some feedback on this short podcast.

What is it about grace that is so difficult for the Church to understand and share with others? Why do we struggle so much with this central issue of Christianity? Maybe you can help us explain it to those who are starving for it....

A little bit about the podcast, and how we view it as a ministry. Our hopes for the podcast and the listeners.

Is there a 'gift of offense?' Is there a 'ministry of offense?' Given that we all get offended, and given that some of us are better at offending people than others, and given that sometimes we don't hear the word we need to hear until it slaps us in the face, isn't it reasonable to ask the question? We thought it was.... we probably had too much fun asking it, but you'll forgive us for that I'm sure.

It stinks to be wrong. We were planning on publishing our Christmas edition this week, but we felt like it was more important to correct our errors from last week. (We'll publish the Christmas edition next Tuesday, instead. Maybe the lingering effects of Christmas will help you enjoy it.)

We were originally planning to post this last week, but we really wanted to get the correction podcast out.... besides, being a day late and a dollar short is just more our style anyway.

What's in a name? Everything! We build a lot of walls around our understandings of Christianity, but Jesus told us that if we believe in him, or as the Apostles put it, "in the name of Jesus," we will be saved. Amen! Powerful, powerful truth.

So, I expect that you'll disagree with us.... we both disagreed with this not very long ago....

Do churches pass over the people God has planted in our congregations that could or should be ministering because they don't have a Bible College degree? Are we hiring people who have a Bible College degree who aren't called to be our ministers while we overlook gifted, qualified people who are already established to minister to our churches and communities?

Disagreeing with someone you love over something that's important to you is the hardest thing. It's often the thing that causes friction in families and churches. If we, as Christians, can learn how to disagree in love, we can learn from those disagreements. We need to learn that there's a big, important difference between 'unity' and 'uniformity.' We are called to unity -- not uniformity. That means we are going to disagree, and that's a good thing!
