Popular culture and the modern Church teach about a "faith" that is believing without evidence, a kind of faith that is weakened by evidence. Well... how, exactly, do you introduce the topic of world views? Since so many people aren't even aware that world views exist, and even fewer aware that they have one.... Put most simply, "Our worldview is our framework for viewing reality." (wikipedia) It's a very difficult idea for some people, but the place to start is in identifying that we have a world view. Once we've cleared that, we can start identifying what's broken in our world view and figuring out how to fix it.

Our neighbors need to hear the Good News about what Jesus has done for us, just as every generation before them did. Unfortunately, it seems that we're not doing a very good job of telling them about the Good News. Part of the problem is that we're still acting like we live in a predominantly Christian culture. In reality, that culture is gone. Most of the problem is that we just don't bother telling them the Good News at all.

Did you ever think about that? Not in context of "Would Jesus wear a Rolex on his TV show," but as in the theological and psychological impact that the things Jesus had owned would have had on the Church.... and also, the things that were important to him when he looked down from the cross.

Are we even trying to reach the reachable, or are we spinning our wheels and wasting Kingdom resources by trying to win the people we feel comfortable with? Our ineffectiveness in our culture, and the directions we're going trying to reach people certainly begs the question.

We'd love to get some feedback on this short podcast.

What is it about grace that is so difficult for the Church to understand and share with others? Why do we struggle so much with this central issue of Christianity? Maybe you can help us explain it to those who are starving for it....

A little bit about the podcast, and how we view it as a ministry. Our hopes for the podcast and the listeners.

Is there a 'gift of offense?' Is there a 'ministry of offense?' Given that we all get offended, and given that some of us are better at offending people than others, and given that sometimes we don't hear the word we need to hear until it slaps us in the face, isn't it reasonable to ask the question? We thought it was.... we probably had too much fun asking it, but you'll forgive us for that I'm sure.

It stinks to be wrong. We were planning on publishing our Christmas edition this week, but we felt like it was more important to correct our errors from last week. (We'll publish the Christmas edition next Tuesday, instead. Maybe the lingering effects of Christmas will help you enjoy it.)

What's in a name? Everything! We build a lot of walls around our understandings of Christianity, but Jesus told us that if we believe in him, or as the Apostles put it, "in the name of Jesus," we will be saved. Amen! Powerful, powerful truth.

Do churches pass over the people God has planted in our congregations that could or should be ministering because they don't have a Bible College degree? Are we hiring people who have a Bible College degree who aren't called to be our ministers while we overlook gifted, qualified people who are already established to minister to our churches and communities?

Disagreeing with someone you love over something that's important to you is the hardest thing. It's often the thing that causes friction in families and churches. If we, as Christians, can learn how to disagree in love, we can learn from those disagreements. We need to learn that there's a big, important difference between 'unity' and 'uniformity.' We are called to unity -- not uniformity. That means we are going to disagree, and that's a good thing!

We seem to get a lot of feedback condemning the Church or condemning the people that go to church, or condemning the reasons people go to church, or just condemning people because "those people" [blah, blah, blah].

Well, I'm tired of it! Listen up, people! "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." If you've got a problem with that.... you've got a problem

One of our listeners (and a good friend of Jody), Brian, asked about martyrs: "When you return to the computer pontificate on "martyrs" ... specifically how to raise awareness of [them]..."

I guess we really didn't answer that question directly, but we did give you some resources. Maybe you can tell us what the Church should be doing to raise awareness about martyrs.

Many times people don't bother to dig into the hard doctrines of Christianity. Christian theology is found in Romans and Corinthians (1 & 2), Galatians, etc.... That's the stuff that a lot of people don't want to mess with. That's where the really good stuff of Christianity gets explained.

When we say, "I do," there's more than the commitment we're making to our spouse. There's more than the commitment we make before those witnesses. When we say, "I do," we make a commitment to God. When we say, "Come into my heart," we're not just making a commitment to God, but we're also making a commitment to God to care for our brothers and sisters.

There are things in those words we will never understand, but we need to understand what we can. We need to take our commitment to the Church (fellow believers) seriously. The commitment we made to each other before God, and in His name.

Christians need fellowship. In fact, all people need fellowship, but Christians need Christian fellowship. It's an essential part of the healthy Christian Life diet. Don't forsake it. Don't fail to do it, and don't fail to do it for others.

Christians need fellowship.... But we can also give fellowship. Think about it. We can fellowship with the world, in the World without being of the World.

Is it easy? No. Is it effective in ministering to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of lost people? Yes!

Traditions help us know who we are, but they can also harm us. To further complicate things, traditions are part of how we're made, how groups, organizations, families and churches work. We have to understand the traditions of others, and be sensitive to them, but we also need to be aware of our own traditions and how they can endanger us.

For the most part, when we read the parable of the "Prodigal Son," we focus on the beautiful image of the "lost/dead" son coming home, and the great party. When the "other/elder" son is referenced, usually it's as an illusion to the Jews. We would like to disagree. We think that the older son is the type of the Church. It's a funny kind of paradox. When you're on the outside, or just grafted into the family, you're the younger son. Once you're on the inside/grafted in, you immediately become the older son.

We make another assault on the doctrine of tithing. This time, we actually stick to the topic, and make a little progress. We didn't reach the summit this time, but we covered some good ground.

If you find yourself trudging through the Christian Life out of a sense of duty or morality, without love and joy, something's wrong. It's not just a simple matter of "something might be missing," this should be a matter of alarm for you. If Christianity is rules and duty and morals and obligations for you, you may very well have missed the boat from the beginning. The Christian Life is Life More Abundant, overflowing, a joyous celebration. It might be time to check your pulse.

Dan and Jody both have kids in a private Christian school. Are we doing this to protect the children? Or to provide for the children? Or is the damage caused to society by removing the Christian influence of these children and families from a society that desperately needs a Christian witness worse than the good we imagine that we're doing? ... or what? Let's break sin down to it's bare, naked core....

The core of Christianity is "putting on the mind of Christ." We don't live it. We don't teach it. We don't really think about it. Interestingly enough, the core of Christian discipleship is the mind.... not the emotions.

Words of wisdom from Pumba: "Put your behind in the past!"

For many Christians, our testimony is the list of terrible things in our past that God saved us from.There's a danger in keeping those memories in front of us (prominent in our minds). There comes a time in our lives that we just have to "put our past behind us," and move on. It doesn't mean those things aren't real, that we should deny them, or that God doesn't intend to use those things to minister to others.

Perhaps we don't get excited enough about "missing sheep." When someone in our congregation drops off the radar, we should go after them, with fear for their lives

Keep Dan in your prayers. He had surgery on his foot on Wednesday the 11th (of July, 2007), and is now home recooperating. He does have a bone infection, which requires watching. Please left Dan up to the Lord.

Primarily it's a discussion about the importance of the doctrine of the resurection, but we discuss a whole range of things, and how we, as humans, tend to screw them up. If there's a particular doctrine you'd like to discuss with us, let us know.

Keep Dan in your prayers. No update from Dan this week. I did get an email forward from him, but that was all. I'll check on him later today.

In 1 Timothy chapter 4, Paul talks to the young pastor about teachings that erode the joy of the gospel, steal from the Church and make the truth that the Church teaches look needlessly foolish. "Godless myths and old wives' tales" that are to be avoided. We should instead train ourselves to be godly. How many times has the Church been dragged into debates about good things that should be outlawed, when everything God has made is good?

Somebody has to stop the nonsense, and in doing so, we can save both ourselves and our hearers.

Like good story telling, good theology takes lots of hard work, lots of good thinking. Unfortunately, it's too easy to take the easy way, and just accept whatever we've been told. We're exhorted in scripture to test everything, and that really does mean EVERYTHING.

The audio is really glitchy, but the content makes it worth publishing (I think). There are some pops, and obviously missing parts of words, but I think you can figure it out. If it's too bad, let us know.

Sometimes we get confused between our Bible (KJV, NIV, NASB, NLT, NET, ASV, ad infinitum). Our point is that none of those are The Bible. Throw in The Message, the Living Bible and company, and you're compounding translation problems with paraphrase. Toss in some presuppositions, some flawed teaching and a pinch (or more) of pride, and you get problems aplenty.
