Lying to defend God?

It's always very tempting lie to defend ones self against all kinds of accusations. Sometimes we even want to defend ourselves from the truth with a lie. It may be more tempting to lie to defend organizations, groups or causes that we are aligned with because of our commitment to them. Lying to defend others is actually a little easier because it's harder to know for sure that we're actually lying, and harder for others to verify that we're "billowing smoke."

Sadly, sometimes Christians lie to defend their faith or the Bible or God. Sadly, it happens often. A lot of so called "apologetics" is lies. (I am so tempted here to name names, but I'm compelled to not do so.) Job had an interesting comment on lying to defend God:

Job 13 (NLT)
7 “Are you defending God with lies?
Do you make your dishonest arguments for his sake?
8 Will you slant your testimony in his favor?
Will you argue God’s case for him?
9 What will happen when he finds out what you are doing?
Can you fool him as easily as you fool people?
10 No, you will be in trouble with him
if you secretly slant your testimony in his favor.
11 Doesn’t his majesty terrify you?
Doesn’t your fear of him overwhelm you?
12 Your platitudes are as valuable as ashes.
Your defense is as fragile as a clay pot.

I would be inclined to agree with Job.... God is not gonna be happy about any time we lie in His defense. That would probably be a very bad tactic to employ, ever.

Even worse, the lies I hear "in defense" of God have horrible practical, ethical and theological implications. It's the worst theology I have ever heard, and it's all done "in defense" of the one who is Truth and Light.
