Christian Doctrine: The Doctrine of God -- William Lane Craig audio (continued -- 4-6)

To be a Christian disciple, you must know what Christians believe. Contrary to popular opinion in churches today, contrary to the American individualistic way, we do not get to make up what we believe. Believing something isn't good enough, we must believe truth.

The following links are to parts four through six of William Lane Craig's teachings on The Doctrine of God:
The Doctrine of God (Part 4)
Why is the Doctrine of Hell important?

Tim Keller, of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, tells us about The Importance of Hell:
1. It is important because Jesus taught about it more than all other Biblical authors put together.
2. It is important because it shows how infinitely dependent we are on God for everything.
3. It is important because it unveils the seriousness and danger of living life for yourself.
4. The doctrine of hell is important because it is the only way to know how much Jesus loved us and how much he did for us.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING MORE THAN EARNEST, R. Scott clark

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING MORE THAN EARNEST by R. Scott clark

"Another legacy to evangelicalism is a radically individualistic faith. If one cannot be certain about the historicity of the faith then one flees to mystical experience. Pietistic evangelicalism replaced the "priesthood of all believers" (access to God through Christ alone) with the "papacy of every believer" (the sole authority of the believer). Individualism has replaced the older Protestant idea of divinely ordained authority located in Scripture and in the courts of the church, and has led to a nearly irreparable fragmentation of the Christian landscape." - R. Scott Clark

Theology Rocks Show #60 - "Getting Doctrines Right... and How We Get Them Wrong"

Primarily it's a discussion about the importance of the doctrine of the resurection, but we discuss a whole range of things, and how we, as humans, tend to screw them up. If there's a particular doctrine you'd like to discuss with us, let us know.

Keep Dan in your prayers. No update from Dan this week. I did get an email forward from him, but that was all. I'll check on him later today.

Tell someone about the show:
- If you like the show, tell a friend about it!
- If you don't like it, tell someone you don't like!

Send us feedback:
- In either case, you can send us feedback by email at feedback@opendiscipleship.org.
- You can also engage in our Open Forums at the web site.
- If you're as geeked as Jody, you can record your question or comment and email it to us at the feedback address.
- You could send a fax to the voicemail number above, if you wanted to....

You can subscribe to this podcast at iTunes: iTunes
You can subscribe to our RSS feed: RSS feed

“Theology Rocks - truths to stand on” is a production of OpenDiscipleship.org, "teaching great truths to trustworthy people who are able to pass them on to others."

“Theology Rocks - truths to stand on” is... Simple, clear talk about theological truths for Christians. A conversation between two Christian brothers about all kinds of theological issues, daily issues with theological implications, and how Christianity should permeate every aspect of the Christian's life.

Theology Rocks Show #40 - "Introduction to Thinking Trinitarian Thoughts - What's In There?"

One of our listeners and friends wrote us asking about the Trinity, "I heard a sermon on this subject; I would like to hear a discussion by you. Some sermons even say, 'Forget the Trinity - they are all "Jesus."' So what is your take?"

That's a great question... and it deserves a thoughtful answer. We don't try to be authoritative on the Trinity, but we try to lay out some guidelines, explain why it's an important doctrinal and philosophical principle, and set some orthodox boundaries. We hope this helps, and generates some good thinking in you. If you have questions, or challenges, feel free to get in touch with us.

Creedal Goodness

Barry Carey over at withallyourmind.net has started a series on "The Creeds and Christianity" (that's Part 1, part two is "What Good Are the Creeds?").

Growing up in the Southern Baptist Church, I was rarely exposed to the creeds, and they always seem foreign and dangerous to me because of their unfamiliarity. I currently attend a no-creed-but-Christ "Independent Non-denominational Christian Church (Instrumental)" (whatever that means), so the creeds are actually perceived (in general) as a "bad thing."

While reading Ken Sample's ([Ken's RTB bio], [Augustine Fellowship Study Center]) Without A Doubt: Answering The 20 Toughest Faith Questions, I was challenged on my preconceived notions about the creeds. Later, when I lead a discipleship study with the book, some really good discussions came from Ken's chapter on the creeds.

I still haven't fully embraced the creeds, but my fear of them is gone. In fact, I will probably start today making them part of the education of my children.

I look forward to the rest of Bary's series on the creeds.
